Top Ten Tuesday: Series I Want To Start

toptentuesdayTo be honest, I don’t read that many book series. It’s not because I don’t like them–I really do! Sometimes I love a book so much I wish it could have endless amounts of sequels. And my favorite book of all time, Anne of Green Gables, is the first book in an 8-book series, which I still wish could have been longer ;)

I think the reason I don’t read very many series is because I don’t want to wait for each installment to be released. I’m not the most patient person… Usually when I read a series I wait to start it until all of the books have been published, or until just before the last book is to be released. The only exception that comes to mind is Harry Potter, which I started reading after the third one came out.

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday meme gives me a chance to list some of the series I have been thinking about starting. I added some TV shows into the mix as well.

Top Ten Book and TV Series I Want to Start

MazeRunner PercyJackson LegendCinder SomethingStrangeDeadly Delirium

The Maze Runner series by James Dashner – Just bought the 4-book box set so I’ll be reading this soon!
Percy Jackson & the Olympians series by Rick Riordan – This has been on my TBR for a while.
The Legend series by Marie Lu – I’ve only heard great things about this YA dystopian series.
The Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer – I haven’t read very many science fiction books!
Something Strange and Deadly series by Susan Dennard – Getting ready to read this first installment for my book club, actually!
Delirium series by Lauren Oliver – Another YA dystopian series (I’m addicted)

Blacklist VeronicaMars
supernatural3 BeautyBeast

The Blacklist – My mom keeps raving about this series and about how much I’d love it. My husband has already watched the Pilot and he agrees. I only haven’t started watching because I don’t have the time right now. During the winter TV hiatus I’ll probably binge watch it.
Veronica Mars – So many of my friends loved this show and I think I’d like it, too.
Supernatural – Like Doctor Who and Sherlock, I know this show has a huge fan base. I’ve always been interested but I don’t really know much about the show so I’m saving it for a rainy, let’s binge watch Netflix kind of day.
Beauty & the Beast – I watched the Pilot earlier this year because my sister-in-law likes this show. I really love Beauty and the Beast adaptations, so I’m going to watch this show soon.

What are some book and television series you’ve been dying to start? I’d love any other recommendations as well!

  1. I highly recommend The Lunar Chronicles. I think the series gets better as it progresses, so don’t be put off if you don’t enjoy Cinder as much as you hoped! :-)

  2. The Lunar Chronicles is one of my favourite series – I definitely recommend it! :) I’ve read the Delirium trilogy, but in all honesty I think I would have preferred it if Delirium were a standalone; I’m sure there are a lot of people who would disagree with me, but there’s something very poignant about Delirium and I found the other two books in the trilogy pretty disappointing. :\

  3. Great post, love that you included TV shows as well. YES TO SUPERNATURAL!!! That show is AMAZING!!! I really want to read the Delirium series, mainly because I feel like almost everyone else has but me… and you ;) I hope you can get to some of these soon :) TTT.

  4. I love Veronica Mars and Supernatural! I just wish that the Veronica Mars series had gone on longer…I totally get why the fans were so aggressive about wanting a movie this past year! I’ve also read through the Percy Jackson series. One of my ninth graders was reading it and got me into it, and I liked it so much that I bought a class set of the Lightning Thief and added it to the curriculum the following year (along with a an entire unit on Greek Mythology, Homer, etc.). I remember reading Lauren Oliver’s Delirium and not being that impressed, for whatever reason. I didn’t read the other two in the trilogy. And I used to watch Blacklist but then I got behind last season because it comes on so late and I always started falling asleep while it was on! I’ll have to binge watch that one to catch up on it sometime, too!

  5. I have two inlaws who adore Veronica Mars. They say it reminds them of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which I love, so I’m sure I’ll try it out some day.

I’m watching Forever on Hulu and really digging it. Ioan Gruffudd as a doctor who is seemingly immortal — he can die, but always returns to life (naken, in the nearest body of water, which is inconvenient). He’s had this curse/blessing since the 1800s, which allows for some fun period-costume flashbacks. It co-stars Judd Hirsch, who is always brilliant, as a man that Ioan’s character found as a baby back during WWII, and has raised. Now of course, he’s fairly old, and their relationship intrigues me so much — both are almost father figures to each other, kind of trading the role back and forth. And also clearly such good friends. I’m hoping this series sticks around, because it’s rather different than anything else I’ve seen lately. It also has this solving-crimes thing going on, and Ioan’s character has a little of the Sherlock Holmes notices-every-tiny-detail-and-makes-brilliant-deductions-from-them thing going on. I’ve only seen 3 eps so far, but I think there are 6 so far. I’m really hoping that it turns out he studied in Edinburgh under the same medical professor who inspired A. Conan Doyle when he created Sherlock Holmes, because that would just be brilliant. That’s my head-canon for the show for now, anyway.

      • Woohoo! You’re the second person in as many days who’s told me they’re watching it too! (Unlike last year when I didn’t know anyone else at all who watched Intelligence.) This makes me very hopeful for it to at least get a complete first season.

          • I love Castle and Bones too! Though I’m woefully behind on both. I started watching Bones when it premiered, but about 3 years ago, I just ran out of time to watch TV (hmm, my 3rd child will be 3 years old in a couple months. Coincidence???), so I’m catching up on DVD sloooooowly. And I started watching Castle when it was in like its third season, so I’ve only watched it on DVD, and I’m almost done with season 5. I love a good mystery, and those both have really excellent characters, so I like them better than a lot of other crime dramas. Except NCIS. I love NCIS. Just had to quit watching it 3 years ago too, sigh. (My third daughter’s first name may or may not have been inspired by my favorite character on NCIS…)

But I’m determined to stick with Forever!

          • Coincidence? I think not! ;)

I started watching Bones back in 2010, same with Castle, and because Castle isn’t on Netflix and they don’t have the DVDs at my local library, I haven’t seen the first two seasons :( But it’s one of my favorite shows on TV.

My husband loves NCIS. Him and his mom got into it because they watched JAG, and NCIS is a spin-off of that show. I think they prefer NCIS: LA, but my husband just started watching the New Orleans spin-off and I caught the last episode and really liked it. This week’s episode was inspired by gothic lit (including one of my favorite Poe stories), so this bookworm was especially into it :)

          • My mom really likes NCIS: New Orleans too. She said “it’s funnier and they have kind of a Gibbs character.” Some day, when the kids are grown, I’ll catch up on my TV watching, lol.

I just read that Dec. 11 will be the 200th ep of “Bones,” David B. is directing, and it’ll be a black-and-white homage to Hitchcock?! So I’m going to have to watch that one online even though I’m seasons behind.

          • Really? I didn’t know that! But I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t reveal too many spoilers. Some of the special episodes from the past were vague about current major plot points at the time, I think because they use these milestone episodes to bring in new viewers and they don’t want to turn anyone away with spoilers.

          • Season 1 is so cute!!! I really miss one aspect of the first couple seasons: Castle used his writing skills to help solve cases. He’d do this whole, “The story doesn’t make sense. If I was writing this…” and that would spark something for Beckett, and… they don’t do that much anymore, and I miss that.

          • Random season 5 of Castle note: I wish they’d actually pointed out that for once Castle was not being paranoid and foolish when he warned Alexis to not post personal info on her vlog. Because it totally got her kidnapped. Everyone’s always pooh-poohing him for being overprotective and paranoid, but… he was being a good dad. And he was right.
