30 Days of Thankfulness: Days 17 & 18

thankfulnessI missed yesterday’s post so you get a 2-for-1 today!

The past couple of days I have been thankful for good health and for living in France.

With the weather getting colder each day, several of my friends here have colds and thankfully I don’t! I usually get a cold whenever the weather starts changing, but not this time :) It’s not easy being a teacher while feeling under the weather, especially when you also have a horrible cough and a voice like the Wicked Witch of the West.

So thank You God for good health and well-being. And for any of you readers who are currently battling a cold, know that our God heals:

“Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion.” [Psalm 103: 2-4]

I am also thankful that I am here living in France. I love this country! Even though I have had difficult times over the last ~2 years adjusting to the culture and the language, I still love living here. This afternoon I was taking a walk around my town (something that isn’t doable where I’m from in Florida), and even though every single shop was closed (just like they are every Monday here), it was still so nice knowing that I can walk to a produce market and then stop at the library I just discovered by the Town Hall before buying bread at the boulangerie on my way back home. I love living in my quaint French village :)

What are you thankful for today?

30 Days of Thankfulness: Day 16

thankfulnessToday I am thankful for my puppy!

For those of you who know me personally, you may be a bit surprised as to why it took me so long to post about being thankful for my dog ;) Matt and I love our Australian Shepherd as if he was our actual child, which may be normal for American standards but that is not very common behavior over here in France.

Han Solo (Solo for short) has brought so much joy into our lives and I am thankful for him every single day. And yes, he is named after my favorite Star Wars character!

And here are some pictures for anyone needing/wanting a puppy fix :)

Solo

He’s a little possessive…

…and he’s a scene stealer (he totally snuck up in this photo)…

Solo

…but how can you not love that dramatic puppy face!

Ok, ok…it’s clear enough that I love my dog :)

30 Days of Thankfulness: Day 12

thankfulnessToday I am thankful for books!

For anyone who follows or regularly reads my blog, you can tell that I post more about the books I read than I do about France (but I do try to keep my blog balanced!).

I am thankful that I live in a country–and that I come from a country–where reading is encouraged and books are made widely available. I am also thankful that I know how to read.

For those of you who LOVE to read, is there one book you are the most thankful for?

30 Days of Thankfulness: Day 5

thankfulness

“Always [give] thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” [Ephesians 5:20]

Today I am thankful for community.

The student ministry (Remix) that we’re involved with here really emphasizes community, and we try to spend lots of time with each other to deepen our relationships and strengthen our community. That is why tonight our men’s and women’s small groups went to play laser tag!!! Oh my goodness, we had a blast! Not only was it at the best laser tag center I’ve been to, but we were all able to bond and connect through playing with each other :)

I thank God that He has brought us here; that we are blessed with our friendships here in France and that we have found a wonderful community. And also I’m thankful for laser tag ;)

Is there something you’re feeling thankful for today?

30 Days of Thankfulness: Day 4

thankfulnessAs I sit here in my apartment on this rainy autumn afternoon, I can’t help but be thankful for all of God’s provision for my family since we moved to France nearly two years ago (which blows my mind to think that we’ve been married and France-dwelling for almost two years now!). God is the ultimate provider, and as I reflect upon all the things He has provided me with, I realize just how blessed I am.

Our apartment, our jobs, food, clothing, and good health–these are just a few of the many, many things my husband and I are blessed with. And I am very thankful that God loves His people and that He provides for our every need.

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.

30 Days of Thankfulness: Day 2

thankfulness“Be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.” [Ephesians 5:18-21]

Today I am thankful for new friends. This morning, Matt and I spent some time with an American couple who just moved here from California. They’re here for the next two years to help out with the student ministry we’re involved with, Remix, and we wanted to show them around Grenoble a little bit. We didn’t do anything special; we walked around the farmers’ market, went to FNAC, showed them one of our favorite (free) museums, and ate lunch together. But it was really nice for us to connect with them, and it turns out we have quite a few interests in common! Mainly some geeky things, like Back to the Future, Battlestar Galactica…Meet the Robinsons (most underrated Disney movie in my opinion)! So, yeah, I’m thankful for making new friends :)

What are you thankful for today?

30 Days of Thankfulness: Day 1

thankfulnessI saw this post from one of the bloggers I follow and was instantly inspired to write my own “30 Days of Thankfulness” posts :)

Thanksgiving is my favorite time of year, and one of the reasons why is because we’re encouraged to celebrate all of the things we are thankful for (and I love being thankful for things). In fact, this is something we should do daily:

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” [1 Thessalonians 5:16-18]

Therefore, during the month of November I will take each day to thank God for a specific thing that I am thankful for, and I encourage you to do the same!

Today I am thankful for my job. These past couple of months have not been easy as I have been adjusting to my new job (one I never thought I’d ever have), but God has been really helping me become a better teacher. He’s giving me confidence in myself, patience with my students, and an earnest desire to see them learn. I have been asking Him to help me with that last one especially, because I don’t want to see this as “just a job.”

These last two weeks France has been on vacation, and I have had two different week-long vacation classes. This week I had a class of 4 very bright, very joyful little girls (THAT was a blessing in itself. Girls are so much easier and calmer than boys). I enjoyed teaching them so much that at the end of the week it made me sad to think I wouldn’t have them in my class anymore :( but I am thankful for my job and for moments like this, when my students bring me “presents”:

Autumn Landscapes

IMG_4314 I just love the mountains that surround our home. There’s a saying about Grenoble: Everytime you turn a corner you can see the mountains at the end of the street. Ok, that was a really bad paraphrase, but it’s true. We’re surrounded by three different mountain ranges: the Belledonne (pictured here), the Chartreuse, and the Vercors. Some people don’t like Grenoble because the mountains can make them feel closed in, but I completely disagree. Being from Florida, I don’t think I’ll ever get used to seeing these gorgeous juts of rock every time I go outside. And now as the trees continue changing color, the mountains become prettier and prettier! They are definitely at their prettiest in the wintertime, but autumn is a nice view too :) The skies were clear and the magic hour lighting was perfect this afternoon so I just had to run outside to snap a few pictures to brag about show everyone. So far it has been a warm autumn, but the trees are making up for it by looking like this: IMG_4317 Hope your little corner of the world is looking beautiful, whether you’re enjoying the autumn or the springtime!

Au Cirque!

Last week I attended an authentic French circus! It was like an American circus, only in French ;) My sister-in-law won two free tickets, so she invited me to go with her and my niece, which was really nice! Timéa wasn’t really into the performances for the most part, except for the elephants and the acrobats. But she’s such a well-behaved toddler that she just sat next to us most of the time, playing quietly.

So here were my favorite circus moments!

  • These acrobats were more like gymnasts, and they did lots of flips and balancing tricks.

Acrobats!

Acrobats

In case it’s hard to make out, those two acrobats on the left would jump on the see-saw and the acrobat on the ground would fly in the air, do a flip, and land on the top of the “acrobat totem pole”

  • Lions and tigers and…more tigers!
IMG_0837

It’s hard to see them all, but there were 5 tigers, 2 lions, and 2 lionesses. That’s 9 (NINE) big cats in one cage!

IMG_0841

Making the tigers roll over…

IMG_0842

Ok, this tiger reminded me of Solo with his dramatic kitty stare. I love tigers!

IMG_0843

More big cat tricks.

  • And then, the elephants! I love elephants, and so does my niece. This was the part of the show she was most intrigued by, and she kept pointing and shouting, “‘Phants!” but in French, so it sounded like “fawn,” but without the ‘n’ sound :)
IMG_0852

They were going for some type of safari-western mixed theme.

IMG_0854

The elephant to the left would walk around in a circle and the elephant on top would have to “tip toe” around on the stool.

IMG_0857

Da-da-da-da-da-DA! Elephant conga line :)

  • And finally, these acrobats were really talented:
IMG_0869

Just watching this made my abs hurt! It’s like Pilates on steroids.

IMG_0867

Ta-Da!

Those were all of my favorite performances…but then there was this one performer who was abominable. He was rather vulgar and inappropriate for a family circus, in my opinion, and the worst thing about him was that he had at least 3 different performances in the show. This is the only picture I took during one of his acts, when he came out in some type of pink bunny decorated bulldozer. Oh, he was also a pyromaniac, so every one of his skits involved fire: eating it, breathing it, being engulfed in it…dancing like Miley Cyrus at the VMA’s while doing all of the above.

IMG_0859

Ugh.

But, besides the inappropriate pyromaniac, I loved the entire show :) It lasted around 2 and a half hours! Which was not bad at all. And afterwards, we were all ready to take a nap…

IMG_0878

…but only my niece got the chance to do that!

Vive les Mariés!

I mentioned not too long ago that French weddings are fantastic! This weekend we had the pleasure of being invited to a beautiful wedding in Annecy, which is about an hour away from us. One of the most striking differences between French and American weddings is that over here, not everyone who is invited to the ceremony is also invited to the dinner. In the States when you receive a wedding invitation, it is expected that you are invited for the entire event. In France when you receive a wedding invitation, it means you are invited to the ceremony, and you are only invited to the sit-down dinner if you receive an invitation for that as well.

For this wedding we attended, we were only invited for the two ceremonies. Yes, two. In France it is required that you have a civil ceremony at the Mairie, or Town Hall. Then you can also have a religious ceremony or any other type of ceremony you would like, but the ceremony where the marriage certificate is signed is at the Mairie.

Not the best pictures, but at least they give you an idea of the two types of ceremonies. And normally, the wedding party does not stand up at the front during the church ceremony like they do in the States (and like they did for the beginning part of our friends’ wedding).

After the civil ceremony, we all gathered around to take pictures and give our quick congratulations before getting into our cars and heading to the church ceremony, which was very sweet and moving. The bride and groom each read aloud their short, yet emotionally touching vows, and tears were had on both sides :) After the ceremony, we all gathered outside to throw tissue paper heart confetti on the happy couple.

I loved the heart confetti!

Side note: her wedding dress was gorgeous! I’ve realized that I’m not a huge fan of French wedding dresses, but her’s was probably the most beautiful one I’ve seen yet!

Finally, we all made our way to the Cocktail Hour, or the “vin de honneur,” en français. One of my favorite parts about French weddings is when all of the wedding guests follow the bride and groom to the reception area, while honking their horns, and everyone has these small tulle bows (typically in the wedding colors) tied to their cars. Some people will even leave them on for weeks afterwards, so if you happen to visit France and see these pieces of tulle tied onto some car’s back window wipers, you’ll know what they’re for!

photo 3

Snapshots from after the ceremonies. (Right) These are the dragées, and they are given out during the reception at every wedding. They’re oval-shaped chocolate (and sometimes chocolate and almond) candies. (Bottom) The reception hall. All of their tables had candy themes!

Even though we didn’t attend the reception itself, we still had a wonderful day! It was a beautiful day for a beautiful wedding, and hopefully I’ll be able to attend a full wedding another time so I can share with you about the never-ending French receptions (just kidding! They end sometime before dawn)!
